Personal Hovercraft - A Little Guidance
When considering an air-cushion vehicle (ACV) for racing its pretty obvious that speed is the foremost requirement. This means it needs to be as light as possible, which is generally achieved by fabricating the vehicle from GRP (Glass Fiber) - great for the power to weight ration, but not so good for safety. Another fact is that racing craft are predominantly designed for land use. GRP isn't really suitable for leisure and rescue use, as the material is too easily damaged and is expensive to repair again. For example, a cage around the fan might restrict the airflow, compromising safety in the interests of a speedier craft. The design philosophy of Hov Pod is simply this - safety is number 1 and speed is second, remember that if you are thinking of diy hovercraft.
DIY enthusiasts might prefer to make one themselves, but this approach leaves serious concerns about safety and also performance. It can take hundreds of hours to put together a self-build, only to find that the vehicle doesn't do what you want it to do. It Isn't True That All Personal Hovercraft For Sale Are Much The Same?
Incredibly, there are a some companies that market "new" vehicles with used engines. Some sell personal hovercraft that drop the front into the water (called 'plow in') and come to a dead stop with possibly serious consequences. Other craft aren't buoyant enough and have difficulty floating! Many personal leisure craft will not lift off from water (better pack a paddle or two). If your hovercraft has a one piece skirt then any repairs are likely to be expensive. Fiber glass hulls are prone to cracking and leaking. Some small craft are tough to handle and operate.
The Hov Pod can be purchased with options of 2 or 4 stroke engines. We fit very reliable and efficient Rotax (2 stroke) or Weber 120 Turbo (4 stroke engines). These engines are covered by special cowling assembly that protects them from the environment but the engine can be access within seconds.
Marine quality engines go through extensive trials for many hours in harsh marine conditions in tropical climates. The four stroke motor is heavier than the two stroke, but are less noisy, and with less harmful emissions, are more economical to operate, and have a greater range per fuel tank. Hovercraft prices will reflect the engine number, size and configuration.
Which is best – two engines or just one?
Some people buy hovercraft using not one, but two engines, the first one for thrust, one for vertical lift. Small hovercrafts usually have only one engine for forward motion and vertical lift; the reason is that it is much simpler and a lot safer to install a single array of controls, more efficient to service a single engine, also you don’t get as much noise using one. Forward thrust engines are frequently mounted forward of the pilot – wow! Imagine the smelly emissions and noise washing over everyone, and the first wave you encounter could swamp the engine, which will cause lift failure. Forward positioned lift engine hovercraft are mostly front end heavy, so increase the chance of plowing in.
Some hovercraft plans show vehicles with no gearbox assembly, this lets them position engines lower down in the hovercraft, which means a center of gravity much lower, which is intended to reduce the possibility of rolling (we’ve witnessed some other craft actually roll right over during a simple low speed turn), and providing much greater control functionality. We also position the engine lower to make sure there is no turbulence in the air flow to the propeller; better airflow results in greater efficiency. Of course we only use brand new engine units, whereas many so called ‘new’ personal vehicles have been sold with second hand engines. Have a lot of fun searching, but beware of cheap hovercraft kits.

Hov Pod – A Product Of Technology
Peter Ward, the founding father of Hov Pod Personal Hovercraft went out one day to find a hovercraft for sale just for fun! He soon saw that because hovercraft operation depends on weight, and enthusiasts of personal vehicles are very often oriented towards racing, hovercraft design process was not addressing an important niche – leisure! The same thing might have occurred to you, "why should there be almost one and a half million Jet Skis officially registered across America, when personal hovercraft aren’t really promoted commercially”.
When all said and done, hovercraft give a better and comfortable experience, and riding on air certainly gives more possibilities for just having fun! Racing vehicles are desired to move at round seventy five mph – and to make this possible very thin hulls are fabricated from fiber glass – smash into a rock and the vehicle just comes apart.
Peter conceived a unique design, concentrating on toughness and safe operation. The first Hov Pod hovercraft were built from fiber glass, but with twin layers covered in Kevlar, which is basically bullet proof. We then included some absorption pads, various engine options – this all happened from 2002 ‘til 2006. First of all, we opted for engines produced by Hirth, then made a decision to convert to Rotax – they have a higher level of support internationally, run more quietly, have higher power and high quality documentation.
A focus on safety aspects ruled out controls that weren’t really necessary - we removed levers for trim, didn’t go for two engines for thrust and life, ruled out gearboxes, to make sure that all can operate the Hov Pod without going through extensive training. While it’s true that the Hov Pod is not the fastest beast out there, it get ups ot speeds of 40 miles per hour, which is plenty for most folk.
If you take a peak at the rear of the majority of small vehicles, you’ll see no protective cage covering the fan - the cages we install on the Hov Pod are thought by racing enthusiasts to add to air turbulence and reduce speed. This is a fact - we would rather have our clients, their family members and people watching safe from broken flying parts, if a propeller fractures in use.
We make sure that batteries are not located in the same compartment as fuel components in order to eliminate the possibility of igniting fuel. Some hovercraft design teams don’t pay enough attention to these fundamentals. Many racing craft have the high temperature exhaust outlet running over the exterior of the vehicle - spectators might get injured, so all exhaust piping is hidden beneath a protective cover.
Up to 2006, Hov Pod sales were increasing so much that we were having problems meeting customer demand - our bank helped us invest a tidy sum of funds into HDPE machines and tooling. The new SPX HDPE hulls started to be produced in ‘08. This material is really tough and resists strong impact – it’s a lot tougher than fiber glass, for instance. When looking for a personal hovercraft for sale, it is vital to consider all relevant design aspects.
